"Antibacterial and antiviral" mask consumption risk tips

Medical masks are mainly divided into three categories: disposable medical masks, medical surgical masks, medical protective masks. Drug regulators in various countries supervise and manage medical masks as medical devices to ensure the safety and effectiveness of products. In China, medical masks are registered according to the second category of medical devices. Up to now, China has approved 762 domestic medical protective mask registration certificates, 2489 domestic medical surgical mask registration certificates, and 3219 domestic disposable medical mask registration certificates, providing a strong guarantee for epidemic prevention and control.
At present, the market claims "antibacterial and antiviral" non-medical masks, generally through blending, spraying and other ways to add various types of antibacterial agents, the main additives include nano-titanium dioxide, nano-silver, quaternary ammonium salts, copper ions/copper oxide, Chinese medicine extracts and so on. The safety and effectiveness of such products should be fully studied and verified. In terms of safety, the risk of long-term inhalation of normal people caused by the shedding of antibacterial agents in masks should be assessed; in terms of effectiveness, whether the addition of antibacterial agents affects the filtering effect of masks and the antibacterial and antiviral effects of antibacterial agents should be verified. The addition of antimicrobials introduces new risks when the clinical effectiveness of such mask products is not fully validated. At present, in the pre-market evaluation of medical devices, the risk benefit ratio of continuous and long-term use of such products is insufficient, and it does not have significant clinical significance.
The State Council's joint prevention and control mechanism for the new coronary pneumonia epidemic has issued and continuously updated technical guidelines for the selection and use of masks for the prevention of new coronary pneumonia among different groups of people, and recommends that consumers scientifically choose the appropriate type of mask based on the guidance of these guidelines.
