Popular science: an effective way to coax a sleeping baby

Many novice parents often worry about sleeping and crying babies. A new study in Japan found that when a baby is crying, it is easier for parents to walk around and sleep. After sitting for 5 to 8 minutes and then putting the baby on the bed, the baby will not wake up easily. The research results were recently published in the online edition of the American Journal of Current Biology.
Researchers from Japan's Institute of Science and Chemistry and other institutions took 21 babies less than 7 months old and their mothers as the research subjects. The study recorded the state and electrocardiogram when the baby was crying, walking, sitting with the baby, pushing in the stroller or lying in bed.
The study found that when the baby crying, parents will hold it to sleep the most easy to make the baby stop crying, walk for about 5 minutes, they are no longer crying, about half of the baby can fall asleep. The team's 2013 study identified this phenomenon, which they called the "transit response," a response shared by mammalian pups. For example, when wild animals move with their cubs, the cubs will be clever and not noisy, which can be safer.
The study also found that 1/3 babies wake up when they are put to bed soon after falling asleep. Analysis of the electrocardiogram found that the babies woke up with a rapid heartbeat as their bodies began to leave their mothers. The study also found that parents put the baby to sleep and then sit for 5 to 8 minutes, the baby can enter a deeper sleep, and then put it in bed is not easy to wake up.
The researchers expect the findings to help reduce parental stress.
